Ohio’s Tax Debate: Who Really Benefits?
Ohio, USAFri Apr 10 2026
In Ohio, a plan to remove property taxes is picking up steam. Supporters argue it would help homeowners keep more money. But who really wins—and who loses? The debate isn’t just about politics. It’s about age, money, and future generations.
Right now, schools and local services in Ohio rely heavily on property taxes. In 2024 alone, they brought in $24 billion. If taxes disappear or shrink, schools could face deep budget cuts. That means less for teachers, fewer books, and older buildings. Even a big cut could leave a gap of billions.
The fight over property taxes isn’t just about red versus blue. It’s about young versus old. Older homeowners, who often have paid off their mortgages, benefit the most from lower taxes. They don’t need to live near good schools or jobs anymore. But younger families, who rely on strong schools and safe neighborhoods, would feel the pain. Their children’s education could suffer, and their tax bills might not drop much if income taxes rise instead.
There’s another problem: housing. Places with big property tax breaks, like California, show what happens when supply shrinks. Prices skyrocket. Young families get priced out of good homes. They end up renting or moving away. Over time, fewer homes get built, and the dream of owning a house slips further out of reach.
Nationally, the picture is similar. The U. S. spends trillions helping retirees—through Social Security, Medicare, and tax breaks. At the same time, fewer workers support more retirees. In 1960, five workers supported each retiree. Now, it’s less than three. The math doesn’t add up.
Debt is climbing too. The country owes $39 trillion, much of it from programs for older adults. Every year, the government spends about $2 trillion more than it collects. If property taxes vanish, that gap could grow even wider.
So, is ending property taxes fair? It sounds good for homeowners. But the real cost might fall on children, schools, and working families. The question isn’t just about saving money today. It’s about who pays the price tomorrow.
