Older Adults in Tehran: How Their Surroundings Shape Their Active Lifestyle

Tehran, IranMon Jun 09 2025
The Ekhtiarieh neighborhood in Tehran is home to many older adults who are trying to stay active. A recent study looked into how these seniors view and use their neighborhood for physical activities. The research focused on four main questions: What are the usual physical activities? What influences these activities? What cultural norms play a role? And how does the neighborhood itself affect their active lifestyle? The study used observations, interviews, and document reviews over a year and a half. It found two main themes: Body Culture and Affordances. Body Culture includes ideas about healthy bodies, social bodies, retired bodies, and female bodies. Affordances refer to the political, physical, and time-related aspects of the neighborhood that either help or hinder physical activity. The research showed that older adults' views of their neighborhood greatly affect their physical activity. In Iran, older adults generally do not engage in much physical activity. However, the local culture and community can change this. By raising awareness about the body during activities, addressing social views on aging, and using the strengths of older adults, communities can promote active aging. The study also suggests that policies should match the needs of society. This can help sports managers and city planners create better environments for active aging. It's important to note that the study's findings are specific to Ekhtiarieh and may not apply to all neighborhoods in Tehran or Iran. However, the insights can still inspire other communities to think about how their surroundings affect the active lifestyle of their older residents. The study highlights the importance of understanding the local context. What works in one place might not work in another. Therefore, it's crucial to consider the unique needs and views of each community when promoting active aging. This approach can help create more effective and meaningful strategies for older adults to stay active and engaged.
