Globally, a large number of people are not consuming enough omega-3 fatty acids. This is a problem because omega-3s are crucial for our health. They help with brain development in babies, keep hearts healthy, and can even reduce the risk of depression and memory loss as we age.
Researchers from different universities and a health retailer teamed up to look into this issue. They found that the guidelines for omega-3 intake vary widely around the world. This makes it confusing for people to know how much they should be consuming. The researchers suggest that we need simpler and more sustainable ways to get enough omega-3s, like foods that have been fortified with these nutrients or taking supplements.
The recommended daily intake for adults is about 250mg of combined EPA and DHA, which are types of omega-3s. Pregnant women are advised to have an extra 100mg to 200mg of DHA. Eating oily fish or taking supplements can help meet these recommendations. However, dietary choices and concerns about the environment can make this challenging.
Interestingly, another recent study found that higher levels of omega-3s in the body are linked to a lower risk of suicidal thoughts. This adds to the growing body of evidence that omega-3s are important for our mental health.
