OpenAI’s New Podcast Move: A Smart PR Play
San Francisco Bay Area, USASat Apr 04 2026
OpenAI recently bought the popular tech talk show TBPN, a move that surprised many in media and tech circles. The purchase is part of a long tradition where big companies buy content to shape conversations about their products. For example, RCA created NBC in the 1920s to sell radios, and Microsoft once teamed with NBC for MSNBC.
TBPN is a live‑streamed show that attracts developers, entrepreneurs and AI experts. Its hosts chat about the latest tech trends, compare executive moves like sports trades, and keep AI front and center. OpenAI wants to use this audience to explain the “how” and “why” of AI, not just break news.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s global affairs officer, said the deal is about messaging. He compared it to news outlets that host sponsored content and sports teams with dedicated channels. The show will keep its daily schedule but also help OpenAI market itself and manage communications.
Many think this is a marketing expense. Mike Isaac of the New York Times called it “marketing” at a time when people are wary of AI’s impact. Lehane said having TBPN’s marketing skills inside OpenAI will help the company build its own media channels.
The deal promises editorial independence for TBPN. Dylan Abruscato, the show’s president, said it will keep full control over content and branding. Yet some critics doubt whether TBPN would ever challenge OpenAI itself. They argue that a tech show owned by an AI company is unlikely to produce hard‑hit pieces about that same company.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is often compared to Elon Musk’s ownership of X. The new acquisition comes after OpenAI shut down its video app Sora to focus on core AI products. Lehane said TBPN is unrelated to compute costs, which are a major expense for AI tasks.
The move shows how companies use media ownership to influence public perception while keeping a front of independence. It also highlights the growing blend of tech and content creation in today’s digital landscape.
