Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has just wrapped up a funding round, hitting a staggering $157 billion valuation. This milestone is thanks to $6. 6 billion from investors like Thrive Capital, Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank. The secret sauce? ChatGPT, launched in late 2022, which has taken generative AI mainstream.
Last month alone, OpenAI raked in $300 million, a massive jump from the start of last year. Next year's projection is even bigger: $11. 6 billion sales. But there's a catch—this year, they expect a loss of about $5 billion due to pricey Nvidia GPUs needed for their language models.
ChatGPT now has 250 million weekly active users, with 11 million ChatGPT Plus subscribers and 1 million business users paying up. OpenAI isn't just stopping at chatbots; they’re exploring AI-generated photos and videos. CEO Sam Altman sees AI as a game-changer for personalized learning, healthcare, and productivity.
However, the company is not without its struggles. Key executives Mira Murati (CTO), Bob McGrew (Research Chief), and Barret Zoph (VP) have left. Altman denies that these departures are related to a potential restructuring of OpenAI. The company might shift to a for-profit model, keeping the nonprofit segment separate. Chairman Bret Taylor hasn’t disclosed any figures regarding Altman’s compensation yet.
