Oracle Wants a Piece of TikTok, But Will It Matter?
USASun Jan 26 2025
Picture this: the U. S. government is trying to give TikTok a makeover, and they’ve invited some big names to the party. We're talking about software giant Oracle and a bunch of American investors. The plan is to hand over the app’s control to these new players, while TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, keeps a small slice of the pie. Oracle would be in charge of data collection and updates, and TikTok’s current management would stick around to keep the show running. This isn’t just about the U. S. —the deal could include other countries too.
President Trump has been wanting the U. S. to have a 50% stake in TikTok for a while now. He’s even delayed a law that said TikTok must be sold or banned by January 19. Oracle and the White House have been sitting down to discuss this, with more meetings planned. Oracle is keen on getting a chunk of TikTok worth billions, but nothing is set in stone yet.
There are other groups trying to snap up TikTok too, like billionaire Frank McCourt’s investment team and YouTube star Mr. Beast’s crew, but they’re not part of Oracle’s deal. TikTok is big—it has 170 million users in the U. S. alone—and some people are worried about how user data might be misused if it stays under Chinese control. But TikTok says all that data is safely stored on U. S. cloud servers, and decisions about content moderation happen in the U. S. too.
It's a complicated dance, with lots of moving parts. Will Oracle sway TikTok’s future? Only time will tell.
