Oregon Governor Orders State AI Rules, Sets 90‑Day Deadline

Gov. Tina Kotek has told Oregon agencies they must start controlling how they use artificial intelligence. She acted as safety worries about the tech grow louder. Other states are also moving forward without federal rules in place. California’s governor issued a similar order last week, showing a trend across the country.

The governor’s order tells officials to create a system for outside experts to check certain AI tools before they are used. It asks the state’s top tech officer to come up with a definition for the most advanced AI models, often called frontier AI. The order also looks into whether a kill‑switch feature could be added to shut down risky systems quickly. No list of specific technologies that need review has been released yet.
