Ovechkin's Goal Rush: Chasing Gretzky's Record
Washington, USAMon Feb 24 2025
In a thrilling match, Alex Ovechkin scored three goals against the Edmonton Oilers, bringing him 13 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL career record. This wasn't just any game; it was a display of Ovechkin's skill and determination. He started with a perfect wrist shot, then scored from his usual power play spot, and finished with a shot from his own zone into an empty net. Despite missing 16 games earlier this season due to a broken leg, the 39-year-old is still on track to surpass Gretzky's record of 894 goals this spring.
Ovechkin's teammates and coaches are in awe of his performance. Charlie Lindgren, the Capitals' goaltender, described Ovechkin as amazing and the best. Dylan Strome, who has assisted on many of Ovechkin's goals this season, acknowledged the challenge of scoring 13 more goals in the remaining 25 games but remained optimistic. Ovechkin himself is taking it one game at a time.
Tom Wilson, a longtime teammate, noted Ovechkin's relentless hunger for goals. He mentioned how Ovechkin always comes back to the bench asking to go out again, making the journey of watching him incredible. Even the opposing team's Corey Perry acknowledged the difficulty of stopping Ovechkin when given the chance.
Ovechkin's performance wasn't without challenges. He almost scored a third goal in the third period but was denied. He had a total of 12 shots on goal, showing his relentless effort. The empty net goal that completed his hat trick was a lucky bounce, but it highlighted his ability to capitalize on opportunities.
Ovechkin tied Jaromir Jagr's record with 135 game-winning goals and moved into a tie for fifth on the hat trick list with Phil Esposito. His next hat trick will be his 33rd, reaching that mark for an 18th season. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery described Ovechkin's performance as unwriteable, noting the difficulty of stopping his goals.
Lindgren, who has played with Ovechkin for the past two seasons, felt lucky not to have to face him as a goaltender. He appreciated the challenge Ovechkin presents and the history he's chasing. The crowd of 18, 573 fans chanted "Ovi! Ovi! " throughout the game, showing their support and excitement for Ovechkin's pursuit of the record.
