Two giant pandas from China, Bao Li and Qing Bao, have landed in Washington, DC, marking the first time in 24 years that the US capital has welcomed new pandas. The big day started at Dulles Airport, where a special FedEx plane dubbed the "Panda Express" touched down with the precious cargo. The pandas were carefully transported to the Smithsonian's National Zoo, where they will stay for 10 years. This isn't just a fun animal story; it's a diplomatic move by China. The pandas will help raise money for conservation efforts in China, with the US paying $1 million annually.
But why all the fuss over these bears? Pandas have been a symbol of goodwill between China and the US since the 1970s. It all started when Pat Nixon, First Lady at the time, fell in love with pandas during a historic visit to China. Since then, pandas have become major attractions at zoos across the US. The National Zoo in DC was the first to exhibit them, and they've been a hit ever since.
Bao Li, one of the new arrivals, has some famous family ties. His mother, Bao Bao, was born at the National Zoo and returned to China in 2017. His grandparents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, lived at the zoo for 23 years. Bao Li is known for his outgoing personality, much like his grandfather. Meanwhile, Qing Bao is more reserved and prefers her alone time.
The journey to DC wasn't just a simple flight. The pandas were prepped for weeks, spending time in their crates and getting used to the idea of a long flight. Keepers from DC even flew to China to help with the transition.
While fans will have to wait until January to see the pandas, the zoo is excited to have them. The zoo's panda exhibit was empty for 11 months after the last pair returned to China. Now, with Bao Li and Qing Bao, the zoo has its star attractions back.
