The latest study from a consulting group that works with nonprofit schools shows most parents think their child’s college expense was worth it. In the survey, 83 % of parents agreed that the money spent on their child’s education paid off. A few parents said they would have made the same choice again, showing a strong overall satisfaction. When asked why they sent their kids to college, parents highlighted personal growth and better job chances as the main reasons. About 44 % wanted their child to become more independent, and 40 % hoped for improved career prospects. Only a third of parents mentioned higher future earnings, indicating that many see college as more than just a paycheck.
The research also compared parents of graduates in STEM or pre‑professional fields with those whose kids earned humanities, arts or social science degrees. Those of the former group were slightly more likely to say college was worthwhile, but the difference was not huge. The findings suggest colleges could tailor their programs to meet what parents value most: independence, skill development and clear career paths. If institutions focus on these strengths, they may strengthen the perceived return on investment for families. The survey marks the first time this consulting firm has asked parents directly about college value, following years of student surveys. It offers a fresh look at how families view higher education in today’s economy.
