In April 2022, India began vaccinating children aged 6-12 against COVID-19. A study looked into moms' views of this new vaccination program. Researchers chatted with mothers from a big city hospital and smaller medical centers in both urban and rural areas. They wanted to understand why some moms might not want to vaccinate their kids. The mothers were split into three groups for these talks, based on where they went for healthcare.
Interestingly, moms who worked at the big hospital knew a lot about the vaccine. But moms from the smaller health centers had less correct information. Many moms in all groups worried about potential side effects and the fact that kids don't usually get very sick from COVID-19. They were more scared to give the vaccine to their kids than they were to get it themselves.
An education didn't always mean moms knew more about the vaccine. Despite different levels of knowledge, all groups had similar concerns. It's important for parents in India to understand the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine for kids.
