Paris Crypto Heist: Family Fights Back
Paris, FranceWed May 14 2025
A recent daylight assault in Paris aimed to snatch the daughter and grandson of a prominent cryptocurrency executive. This brazen attempt, captured on camera, was thwarted by quick-thinking bystanders. The incident is just one in a series of violent events targeting France's growing crypto industry.
The incident unfolded in Paris's 11th district. Four masked men, emerging from a van mimicking a delivery service, attempted to force the woman and her partner into the vehicle. The woman managed to grab a fake gun from one of the attackers and tossed it away, drawing the attention of passersby.
Witnesses intervened, with one using a fire extinguisher to drive the assailants away. The attackers eventually fled, leaving behind a chaotic scene. The victims suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital. The woman, who was five months pregnant, received treatment for shock.
The woman is the daughter of the CEO of Paymium, a French cryptocurrency exchange. Following the attack, Paymium called for enhanced security measures for crypto firms. France's Interior Minister announced a meeting with crypto entrepreneurs to address these concerns. The Paris prosecutor's office launched an investigation into the attempted kidnapping.
The attack is part of a troubling trend. In May, the father of a crypto entrepreneur was kidnapped and held for ransom. In January, the co-founder of Ledger, a French crypto firm, had his hand mutilated during a kidnapping. These incidents highlight the risks faced by individuals in the crypto industry.
The use of a fake delivery van adds another layer of complexity. Chronopost, the delivery company whose branding was mimicked, denied any involvement. This tactic of impersonation raises questions about the lengths to which criminals will go to execute their plans.
The crypto world is booming, but so are the dangers. As more people invest in digital currencies, the need for robust security measures becomes ever more critical. The recent attacks in France serve as a stark reminder of the risks involved and the urgent need for protective measures.
