Patients Weigh In on Hospital Sustainability

Netherlands, University Medical CentreWed Aug 05 2026

Hospitals have a significant carbon footprint, especially in high-income countries. But what do patients think about hospital policies aimed at reducing this impact? A recent survey in the Netherlands sheds some light on this question.

In the survey, patients were asked about the importance of different environmental sustainability initiatives. The results showed that disease prevention was the top priority, followed closely by waste reduction and healthy nutrition. Sustainable mobility was considered less important.

Interestingly, older patients and those with higher levels of education were more likely to think that these initiatives were important. This suggests that patients are not just concerned about their own health, but also about the impact of hospital policies on the environment.

The survey also included an open-ended question, which allowed patients to share their thoughts on what else hospitals could do to reduce their environmental impact. Some common themes that emerged included reducing medication waste, using energy more efficiently, and raising awareness about environmental sustainability.

Overall, the survey suggests that patients are supportive of hospital-led environmental sustainability initiatives, but also have some ideas for how these policies could be improved. This is an important finding, as it highlights the need for hospitals to involve patients in decision-making about environmental sustainability.
