The U. S. Institute of Peace (USIP) was created by Congress to promote peaceful solutions to global conflicts. It was meant to represent America's commitment to peace-building worldwide. However, recent events have turned this institution into a symbol of something quite different.
President Trump has taken control of the USIP board, removing members without proper Senate approval. He has also slashed its funding, attempting to shut it down. Yet, in a surprising twist, he is now taking credit for the institute's achievements and has even put his name on the building.
This move comes just as Trump is set to sign a peace agreement between Congo and Rwanda at the very building he tried to close. The timing seems suspicious, as if he is using the institute's reputation to boost his own image.
Trump's actions have not gone unnoticed. Critics have pointed out the hypocrisy of a president who renames the Department of Defense to the Department of War, authorizes attacks without proof, and threatens military action against other countries, all while claiming to be a peacemaker.
At home, Trump's rhetoric has provoked violence. His attacks on Somali immigrants, many of whom are documented citizens, have led to increased tensions. His obsession with a congresswoman of Somalian descent even led to a controversial visit to Minneapolis, which many saw as an attempt to stir up trouble.
Trump's claims of ending wars and campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize are met with skepticism. His actions, such as ordering the killing of people in boats off the coast of Venezuela without evidence, raise serious questions about his commitment to peace.
Senator Rand Paul has pointed out the absurdity of these actions, noting that the targeted boats had no chance of reaching the U. S. and that fentanyl is not produced in that region. Trump's threats of military action and increased ICE enforcement have only added to the controversy.
The president's rhetoric has also put lives at risk. His suggestion that some legislators' words are seditious and punishable by death has led to threats against lawmakers. Senator Elissa Slotkin, a decorated veteran, has even received death threats and requires constant protection.
The renaming of the U. S. Institute of Peace to the Donald J. Trump U. S. Institute of Peace is a stark example of the hypocrisy that has become all too common. It is up to the voters to see through these actions and hold leaders accountable.
Recent special elections show a growing discontent with the chaos in Washington. The hope is that this discontent will continue and lead to meaningful change in the upcoming mid-term elections.
