Peace Voice in Cameroon: A Pope’s Call for Unity
Bamenda, CameroonFri Apr 17 2026
A pope visited the western city of Bamenda in Cameroon, a place where people have lived through years of fighting. The crowd welcomed him with music and cheers, showing how much hope he represents for many.
During his stay, the pope spoke at a cathedral that had been given to him by local leaders. He praised a group of religious people from different faiths who are trying to stop the war and help those hurt by it. He warned that using religion for war or money is wrong, especially when people want power over land and resources.
The conflict in Cameroon began after the country was split between France and Britain after World War I. English‑speaking areas joined the French part in 1961, but many felt ignored later. In 2017 they started a rebellion that has killed more than 6, 000 people and displaced many others. The fight is still ongoing, even though some pauses have been announced.
The pope urged a “decisive change of course. ” He said that the world is damaged by a few powerful people, but many ordinary people can bring peace. He called for ending the exploitation of natural resources like oil and minerals, which fuels more violence.
Some local families still doubt that a visit can change anything. One mother of three, who lost her husband in the fighting, said that real progress must come from those in power. Yet the pope’s words echo across the city, reminding people that peace is possible when everyone works together.
The meeting included a chief, a church moderator, an imam and a nun. Their discussion showed that different religions can unite to solve problems. The pope’s message was clear: no one should use faith for war or greed.
The city of Bamenda is near Cameroon’s border with Nigeria. It has a rich history and many natural resources, but also many scars from the war. The pope’s visit shines a light on these issues and encourages people to hope for a better future.
