As summer fades away, a unique guest starts to appear in Minnesota. We're talking about pelicans! These large birds with their signature pouch-like bills are making a pit stop at lakes like Long Meadow Lake in Bloomington before they head south for the winter. You might be surprised to know that these big guys gather by the hundreds, feasting on fish and building up energy for their long journey ahead. Bob Dunlap, who works with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, says this is a normal sight in southern Minnesota at this time of year. It's like they have a calendar too!
While the weather stays warm, pelicans will hang around, enjoying all that the lakes have to offer. But once it starts getting colder and those north winds pick up, off they go! They fly south to escape the cold, creating an amazing sight in the sky. If you're quick, you might even catch a great photo of them.
