Pennsylvania's wine and spirit sales have taken a hit, marking only the second time in 30 years this has happened. The latest figures show a drop to $3. 16 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25, a small but notable decrease from the previous year. This decline is part of a bigger trend. People are changing their drinking habits. Ready-to-drink cocktails are becoming more popular. Health trends are also playing a role. Plus, economic worries and tariffs are making people more careful with their money.
The state's liquor control board saw a big drop in profits too. Net income fell by nearly half, to $135. 2 million. Higher costs for salaries, benefits, and pensions played a part in this. The last time sales dropped was during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-20. Before that, it was way back in 1993-94.
This isn't just a Pennsylvania problem. Nationwide, fewer adults are drinking. A recent poll shows only 54% of adults drink alcohol, the lowest in 90 years. Younger adults are drinking even less, with only half saying they drink, down from 59% last year.
Local bars are feeling the pinch. Many are trying new strategies to attract customers. Some are adjusting their closing times or adding more happy hours. Others are offering free games like darts to draw in crowds. Earlier this year, changes to the state's liquor laws allowed bars to offer more happy hours and discounted meal combos with drinks. This shows that both the industry and lawmakers are trying to adapt to the changing times.
