Pentagon Narrows Down Tech Priorities
The Pentagon is set to reduce its list of "critical technology" areas. Emil Michael, the undersecretary for research and engineering, announced this at a recent conference. He stated that the current list has become too lengthy and diluted in significance.
Leadership and Current Status
Michael succeeded Heidi Shyu, who had identified 14 critical technology areas in 2023. These included:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Quantum Technology
- Biotechnology
- Advanced Materials
Each area had a designated leader, but Michael believes the list needs to be more concise.
Key Technologies to Remain
When questioned about specific technologies, Michael hinted that artificial intelligence, directed energy, and hypersonics would stay on the list. He promised more details in a month, emphasizing the focus on the most crucial technologies, even if others remain valuable.
Artificial Intelligence
Michael highlighted AI as a major opportunity for the Department of Defense. He mentioned tools like ChatGPT and Grok, which are widely used and could benefit millions of employees and workers. He also addressed concerns about the Chief Digital & AI Office being moved under his department, assuring that this change will strengthen partnerships with AI providers.
Directed Energy and Hypersonics
Michael also emphasized the importance of directed energy weapons and hypersonics. He believes these technologies can make defense more cost-effective, especially against groups like the Houthis. He aims to leverage industry relationships to deliver these technologies to warfighters quickly and at scale.
Strengthening the Defense Industrial Base
Michael stressed the need for more companies and technicians to support the defense industrial base. He wants to increase competition and capacity in the supply chain. He also highlighted the importance of leveraging private sector investments in AI, which amount to billions of dollars annually.
