People with crypto investments are spending less and saving more

United States, USAWed May 13 2026
A new study shows over a third of US crypto traders are cutting back on daily expenses because their digital money isn’t worth as much as before. About 36% have reduced spending on things like food, entertainment, or transportation. For 10% of those, the cuts are big enough to affect their quality of life. Another 37% have delayed buying big-ticket items like cars or home renovations, with 21% putting off major plans such as purchasing a home. The losses come after Bitcoin dropped about 40% from its high, leaving many with unrealized losses they can’t ignore. What makes this downturn different is how quietly it’s hitting households. Most crypto owners aren’t talking about their investments openly. Only 5% share the full details with others, while the rest keep it private or only share bits and pieces. This secrecy makes it harder for friends or family to offer support or advice. Some traders have even dipped into savings or missed payments to stay afloat, even though 77% haven’t borrowed money against their crypto.
Despite the financial strain, most aren’t panicking. Nearly half still keep more than 30% of their investable money in crypto. Around 73% haven’t changed their job or side gig plans because of the market. When asked about the next six months, 79% said they’ll either hold on to their crypto or even buy more. It seems the dream of big gains is still alive for many, even if reality is different right now. The survey also reveals another trend: people are choosing banks based on whether they offer crypto services. In Europe, 35% say they might switch banks if another one provides better crypto options. Nearly one in five expects their main bank to add crypto access within three years. This shows how digital money is slowly becoming part of everyday banking, even if most people still treat it as a side interest.
