Paris, FranceThu Dec 19 2024
Pharrell Williams, known for his 13 Grammy wins and numerous award nominations, has taken on a new challenge. On December 17, the singer, producer, and songwriter was appointed as UNESCO’s goodwill ambassador for artistic education and entrepreneurship. This rare honor, bestowed in a Paris ceremony, will see Williams promoting initiatives like the protection of indigenous cultures, advancing education and healthcare for women, and raising awareness about genocide prevention.
Growing up in Virginia, Williams didn't dream of this opportunity. He aims to use his new role to foster unity and even the odds for marginalized communities. UNESCO’s general director, Audrey Azoulay, praised Williams as a complete artist and humanist, emphasizing his belief in creativity and education to build a better future.
Williams will mentor young creators, particularly in Africa, where UNESCO supports cultural industries. He joins other ambassadors like K-pop group Seventeen and jazz legend Herbie Hancock. To mark his nomination, Williams spoke to 800 students at UNESCO headquarters, sharing his LEGO biopic, "Piece by Piece. "
