Phone Cameras: Why the Bump Keeps Growing
Sun May 17 2026
The shape of a phone’s back has changed a lot over the last twenty years. Early mobile devices had camera modules that sat flush with the rest of the body, giving a smooth look. By 2016 even flagship phones started to show a raised camera area. Today, the newest iPhone and Samsung models have the biggest bumps seen in their lines yet.
Why can’t manufacturers make a flat camera? The main reason is that they want phones to stay slim while improving image quality. A smaller phone means less space for the camera’s sensor and lens system, so a bump is unavoidable. When phones like the Galaxy S25 Edge are only 0. 23 inches thick, every extra millimeter for a camera shows up as a noticeable protrusion.
Another factor is the size of the sensor. Bigger sensors capture more light, which gives clearer pictures, especially in low‑light conditions. To fit a larger sensor inside the same phone frame, designers have to push it outwards. Even if the number of pixels rises from 50 MP to 200 MP, each pixel would be smaller and less able to gather light if the sensor were squeezed too tight. Therefore, a certain thickness is necessary to keep photo quality high.
Lens physics also limits how compact a camera can be. Light must travel from the lens to the sensor at a specific distance to focus correctly. If that distance is too short, images blur or lose detail. Telephoto lenses need even more space because they use mirrors or extra glass to extend the optical path, so their modules are naturally larger.
Designers chase a premium look, often racing to make the thinnest phone possible. A camera bump is seen as a flaw by many users, but it’s also a badge of high performance. Some cases make the phone uniformly thick to hide the bump, but that defeats the purpose of a slim device.
Because current technology can’t shrink sensors or lenses enough to eliminate the bump, and because consumers still want better cameras, the trend toward larger camera modules is likely to continue. Expect future phones to keep their stylish looks while adding even more pronounced camera protrusions.
