At Foothill College, two physics teachers, Frank Cascarano and David Marasco, are preparing for something extraordinary. They are not just teaching physics; they are performing it. Their show, "The Physics Show, " is a mix of science and magic. They will make fire with mirrors, drop eggs without breaking them, and even lie on beds of nails. All this happens at the Smithwick Theatre on the Foothill campus in Los Altos Hills.
The show is not just for fun. It is part of a bigger mission. The college wants to inspire young students, especially those from low-income and underrepresented communities. The goal is to make physics exciting and accessible. The shows are scheduled for December 20-21 and January 3-4 and 10, 2026. Tickets are just $6, and the money goes to fund performances for students at Title I schools.
The show includes a campus tour, free t-shirts, and physics games. Since its start in 2007, "The Physics Show" has reached nearly a quarter of a million people. The teachers believe that physics is about understanding the world around us. They want to spark curiosity in young minds. Cascarano says, "It's a way to give back to the community and make science fascinating for everyone. "
But is this the best way to teach physics? Some might argue that magic tricks oversimplify complex concepts. Others might say it's a great way to capture attention and inspire young minds. Either way, the show is a creative approach to education.
