Pickleball has become a sensation, popping up everywhere from local parks to community centers. Its popularity has surged, with over a 223% increase in players in just three years. This growth spans all ages, making it a truly inclusive sport. However, with more people playing, there's an alarming rise in injuries, especially to the eyes.
Eye injuries from pickleball can be serious, ranging from retinal detachments to fractures and even vision loss. In 2024 alone, emergency rooms saw more than 1, 200 cases linked to pickleball—three times the number from a few years back. Most of these injuries happen to players over 50, accounting for 70% of the cases.
Experts point out that many of these injuries occur when the ball bounces unpredictably off a paddle, hitting players in the face at close range. To combat this, experts are pushing for better eye protection. They recommend shatterproof goggles, similar to those used in racquetball or squash. Regular glasses or sunglasses just don't cut it—they aren't designed to handle the impact of a fast-moving ball.
Dr. Clara Colon Garcia-Moliner, an ophthalmologist, highlights the importance of using the right protective gear. She explains that racquetball goggles are the easiest to find and offer the best protection. These goggles are specifically designed to withstand hits from various sports equipment, making them the safest choice for pickleball players.
As pickleball continues to grow, so does the need for awareness about eye safety. Players, especially those new to the sport, should prioritize protective gear to enjoy the game safely.
