Pixar's Buzz Lightyear Beach Party and New Toy Story 5 Villain
France, AnnecySat Jun 14 2025
Pixar has given fans a sneak peek at what's to come in Toy Story 5, just a year before its release. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Pixar's chief creative officer, Pete Docter, shared some exciting news and concept art from the upcoming film. One of the highlights was the first footage from Toy Story 5, which shows Buzz Lightyear waking up on a beach. He is surrounded by other Buzz toys, all of whom seem to have washed up from a shipping container that fell overboard. These Buzzes gradually remember their mission and build a raft to escape the island. This scene sets the stage for an adventure that will likely involve teamwork and problem-solving, themes that have always been central to the Toy Story series.
Docter also confirmed that Joan Cusack will be returning to voice Jessie, the beloved cowgirl doll from Toy Story 2. Alongside Jessie, Bullseye and Buzz are shown confronting a new threat: a frog-themed tablet named Lily Pad. This tablet competes with the toys for Bonnie's attention, adding a modern twist to the story. Lily Pad is described as sneaky and prickly, suggesting that the film will explore themes of technology versus tradition and the challenges of adapting to new forms of entertainment. This new villain raises questions about how technology impacts relationships and whether it can ever truly replace the joy of playing with physical toys.
In Toy Story 5, Jessie takes on a new role, overseeing Bonnie's room after Woody's departure at the end of Toy Story 4. However, Woody returns to help his friends, and the dynamics between the toys have changed. This reunion will likely bring both joy and conflict, as the characters navigate their evolving relationships. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton, known for his work on Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Stanton's involvement suggests that the film will blend heartwarming moments with innovative storytelling, a hallmark of his previous work.
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are reprising their roles as Woody and Buzz, respectively. Additionally, Conan O'Brien has been cast as a new character named Smarty Pants, and Ernie Hudson will voice Combat Carl, a role previously held by the late Carl Weathers. These casting choices indicate that the film will continue to feature a mix of familiar and new faces, keeping the story fresh while honoring its roots.
Pixar also announced a new original film, Gatto, set to release in the summer of 2027. This film is set in Venice and follows a black cat named Nero who befriends a street musician. The story explores Nero's struggle to escape the influence of the feline mob, adding a layer of intrigue and adventure. The film will be directed by Enrico Casarosa, who previously worked on Luca, another film set in Italy. Docter described the film's visual aesthetic as distinct from Pixar's previous projects, suggesting a unique blend of depth and painterly texture.
Another upcoming Pixar film is Hoppers, a comedy about a young nature lover named Mabe. Mabe tries to prevent the construction of a new highway that threatens the woodlands and, in the process, jumps into the body of a robotic beaver. This film, directed by Daniel Chong, is set to release on March 6, 2026. The story raises important questions about environmental conservation and the impact of human development on nature. It also promises to be a heartwarming tale of adventure and self-discovery. The cast includes Piper Curda as Mabel, Jon Hamm as the villainous Mayor Jerry, and Bobby Moynihan as King George of the beavers.
