Pixel's New Trick: Personalize Your Lock Screen with Magic Portrait
Wed May 21 2025
Google's newest feature for Pixel phones, Magic Portrait, is making waves in the Android 16 beta. This tool is designed to make lock screen wallpapers more eye-catching by framing the main subject. It's part of the Pixel wallpaper app's effects and works by isolating a portion of an image and offering various frame shapes and background colors.
The feature is already available for Pixel 9 Pro users who have updated to the Android 16 beta. To access Magic Portrait, users need to open the Pixel wallpaper app, tap on the lock screen preview, and select the effects button. The system then analyzes the wallpaper and automatically cuts out a portion to place within a frame. The default frame is an oval, but other shapes like a rounded square and a clover are also available.
Users can choose from a few background color options, although a color wheel for precise color selection is not available. This might limit some users' creativity, but it's a small trade-off for the convenience of the feature. For those who prefer a more dynamic look, there's also an option to apply weather effects to the wallpaper. These effects, similar to Samsung's Live Effect wallpapers, include fog, rain, snow, and sun. They can add a dynamic touch to various wallpapers, making them more engaging.
Magic Portrait is a welcome addition to the Pixel's wallpaper customization toolkit. It allows users to highlight the most important part of any wallpaper, such as a person or pet, and showcase it in an attractive frame. The option to apply dynamic weather effects can also bring static shots to life, aligning with Google's broader goals for its Material 3 Expressive design language. This language aims to make the Android experience feel more expressive and individual.
However, it's important to note that Magic Portrait is a Pixel-exclusive feature. This means that other Android devices won't receive it, at least not initially. But this doesn't prevent other device makers from implementing their own versions of this feature. In fact, some already offer similar customization options. This could lead to a wave of innovation in the Android community, with each manufacturer trying to outdo the other.
The lock screen is one of the most frequently viewed parts of a phone. By providing a way to personalize it, Google is giving users a chance to express themselves. This is a smart move, as it makes the phone feel more personal and unique. It's also a great way to make the most of the phone's display, turning a static image into a dynamic, engaging piece of art.
