Plant Invaders in Northeast Uttar Pradesh: A Closer Look

North-Eastern Uttar Pradesh, IndiaSun Dec 29 2024
In the northeastern Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, the vegetation landscape is a mix of grasslands, old fields, wastelands, and forests. This area, like many others in the country, faces a challenge: invasive alien plant species. These intruders not only disrupt the growth and production of local food crops but also negatively impact the native biodiversity. To better understand this issue, a study was conducted to identify and catalog these invasive species. Out of the 1135 known plant species in the region, 149 were found to be invasive aliens. These plants were identified by their origin, historical data, and how they group together in the wild. Interestingly, about 80% of these invasive species were introduced from the neotropics. Across India, there are 173 known invasive plant species. The northeastern region of Uttar Pradesh shares 149 of these, with 66% originating from Tropical America, 14% from Africa, and the rest from other countries. Early detection and reporting of these harmful weeds are crucial for controlling their spread. This requires careful planning and vigilance to protect the local ecosystems.
