Poland's Presidential Showdown: Two Leaders, Two Paths
PolandSun May 18 2025
The current president of Poland has been a major roadblock for the government's plans. This Sunday, voters will decide if the stalemate continues or ends. The presidential election is more than just a choice between two main candidates. It's about the future direction of the country.
Poland's president has significant power. Unlike some European leaders, the Polish president can veto laws, influence foreign policy, and even propose new legislation. This makes the presidential election crucial for the government's agenda.
When the current government took over in late 2023, many Poles hoped for quick pro-democracy reforms. The government promised changes in several areas, including abortion laws, LGBTQ+ rights, and media reform. However, the president has blocked most of these attempts, leading to frustration among voters.
The government is backing Rafal Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw. He is seen as the strongest candidate, even though he lost the last presidential election. Trzaskowski is known for his liberal views on abortion and his support for the EU's climate policy. He has been leading in the polls, although his lead has recently narrowed.
The president is supporting Karol Nawrocki, a historian and the head of Poland's Institute of National Remembrance. Despite his independent status, Nawrocki has the backing of the conservative Law and Justice party. His campaign has faced controversies, including allegations of underworld connections and irregular property deals. Nawrocki has criticized immigrants, the EU's Green Deal, and Germany. He has also gained international attention with a meeting with former US President Donald Trump.
Another candidate, Slawomir Mentzen, has gained traction among young voters with his extreme right-wing views. He has been active on social media and has held numerous campaign events. However, his support has recently decreased, putting him in third place in the polls.
The election is likely to go to a runoff between Trzaskowski and Nawrocki. While Trzaskowski is leading in the polls, the outcome is uncertain. Voters who supported the ruling coalition may choose to stay home, and Mentzen's supporters could sway the results in the second round. The government is likely to be anxious until the final vote is counted.
