The Washington, D. C. , police have decided to close the case that was opened against Dr. Shawn DeRemer, an anesthesiologist from Portland who is married to the U. S. Labor Secretary. The investigation began on January 24, after a report said that an alleged sexual act occurred on December 18 at the Labor Department building on Constitution Avenue. A woman, whose name was withheld, claimed that she was touched without her consent.
Detectives worked with the U. S. Attorney’s Office, which concluded that no criminal evidence existed to support the claim.
Earlier reports from The New York Times said that DeRemer was barred from the Labor Department after at least two female staffers reported sexual assault. The police report, however, mentioned only one victim.
The allegations against DeRemer came during a separate inquiry by the department’s inspector general into possible misconduct by the Labor Secretary and her team. The secretary herself is being investigated for an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate, misuse of taxpayer funds for personal travel, and keeping alcohol in her office while drinking during work hours.
She is a former Oregon congresswoman who served the 5th District from 2023 to 2025 and was appointed by President Trump in 2025 after losing a reelection bid. Her past includes serving as mayor of Happy Valley and publicly supporting Trump’s attempt to deploy troops in Portland.
These events highlight the complex interplay between personal conduct and public office, raising questions about accountability and oversight in government roles.
