Politicians and Their Religious Claims
USAFri Mar 06 2026
The claim that a leader’s faith guides all their actions is common, yet when policy choices clash with religious teachings, the story changes.
In Washington, several lawmakers say they are guided by their faith, but their voting records show a different picture.
Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi both identify as Catholic, while New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Representative Ilhan Omar state they are Muslim. Each asserts that their religion shapes them, yet their records on abortion and LGBTQ+ issues diverge sharply from what their faith institutions teach.
The Catholic Church has long taught that abortion is morally wrong, a stance Biden moved away from early in his career and later championed as president. Pelosi has opposed restrictions on late‑stage abortions and received an award from Planned Parenthood, actions that conflict with the Church’s clear condemnation.
Islamic scholars generally see abortion as disallowed when it takes innocent life, but Mamdani’s record shows he votes for no restrictions at all. Omar supports legislation that removes many abortion limits, a position critics say undermines the moral stance of her faith.
Both Catholic and Islamic teachings oppose same‑sex relationships and transgender practices. Yet Biden has officiated a gay wedding, supported transgender surgeries for minors, and rolled back conscience protections that would have let Catholic doctors refuse. Pelosi has defended same‑sex marriage and transgender rights, even calling the former “consistent” with Catholic teaching.
Mamdani is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, pledging large sums for transgender medical procedures and pushing an LGBT curriculum in all schools. Omar backs women’s participation in women‑only sports, marches in Pride parades, and opposes conversion therapy.
When leaders publicly claim their faith guides them while acting contrary to core religious doctrines, the public must ask why. Media coverage often overlooks these contradictions, allowing politicians to keep religious labels while pursuing policies that may erode the very values they profess.
