Pakistan's Punjab province is facing a severe air pollution crisis. Over 11 million children under five are at risk, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). The air quality in Punjab is so bad that it's called a "calamity. " Schools and public spaces are closed until November 17 to protect kids. The Air Quality Index in seven cities is above 400, with Sialkot reaching a hazardous 774. Lahore and Multan recently broke pollution records, hospitalizing many, including children.
Air pollution is extremely harmful to young kids. Their smaller lungs and developing immune systems make them more vulnerable. It can damage brain tissue and affect cognitive development. Pregnant women exposed to polluted air may face premature births and respiratory issues.
The closure of schools has disrupted the learning of about 16 million children in Punjab. The government has switched to online learning. Unicef's representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, calls for immediate action. He urges the government to reduce emissions from agriculture and industry, and promote clean energy. Enforcing existing regulations and strengthening emissions rules is crucial.
COP29 is an opportunity for governments to turn climate talks into real action. We can't let kids breathe toxic air. Their health, education, and well-being are at stake. Urgent action is needed for their sake.
