Porn Sites vs. Texas: The Fight Over Online Age Verification
USAThu Jan 16 2025
The U. S. Supreme Court is diving into a hot topic: online age verification for adult content. Last week, the court took a close look at a Texas law that wants porn sites to check that users are 18 or older. This isn't just about Texas; 19 states have similar laws. But is this law fair or does it go too far?
Pornhub and other big adult sites say the law is unfair. They think it targets their industry while ignoring other sites like search engines and social media. They also worry about data privacy and security. And let's not forget, a lot of people watch porn. A study found that up to 70% of men and 40% of women in the U. S. have watched porn in the past year.
Supporters of the law say times have changed. Two decades ago, the Supreme Court said parents and tech companies should use content filters. But those tools haven't worked well, they argue. Now, it's easier to prove your age online. Plus, they say, protecting kids from harmful content is important.
But here's where things get tricky. The First Amendment protects free speech. Some people think the law goes too far. They worry about adults' right to privacy and the risk of data breaches. They also think the law could affect more than just porn sites.
So, what will the Supreme Court decide? We'll find out by the end of June.
