Port Gains Surpass Expectations Amid Global Turbulence

Mobile, USATue Apr 28 2026
The Alabama Port Authority board met Tuesday to review the year’s progress, and the results were brighter than many had predicted. CEO Doug Otto highlighted that the port’s total earnings now reach $52. 8 million, a full $21 million above the forecast for this period. With half the fiscal year already complete, the port has hit 83. 2% of its planned budget, leaving a strong lead for the remaining months. A standout month was March. Revenues hit $22. 2 million, topping expectations by $4. 2 million, while costs stayed $1. 7 million below the budgeted amount. The Pinto Island steel terminal was a key driver, moving 252, 808 tons—over 80, 000 tons more than anticipated—and matching the previous year’s steel throughput. The terminal railroad also outperformed, hauling 14, 116 cars, which is more than 4, 600 above target and 4, 017 higher than the same period last year.
Coal transport surged as well. In March alone, 1. 57 million tons of coal passed through the terminal, exceeding the budget by 259, 000 tons. This volume arrived on 221 barges and 9, 379 rail cars, enabling the loading of 20 vessels that month. Forest products saw a modest increase of 3% year‑to‑date, and container traffic rose sharply—32% from the prior month and 5. 4% above last year’s figures. Despite a challenging year for the container terminal in 2025, caused by shifting U. S. tariff policies and other disruptions, the port continues to expand its capacity to support long‑term growth.
