Travelers are facing a tough time after the holidays. A powerful winter storm, known as a bomb cyclone, has left a trail of snow and ice from the Midwest to the Northeast. As of Monday, over 32 million people are under winter weather alerts. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is under a blizzard warning, and areas downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario could see up to 36 inches of snow. The storm isn't the only issue. Icy roads are a big problem in the Northeast after a snowstorm and freezing rain. A half inch of ice is expected to accumulate from Pennsylvania to Maine, which could lead to power outages and tree damage.
Strong winds are also causing trouble. On Monday, 109 million people are under wind alerts across the country, with gusts up to 70 mph in some areas. These winds could even spawn tornadoes, as already seen in Illinois. Air travel is also affected. Over 10, 000 flights were delayed on Sunday, and by Monday morning, more than 1, 380 flights were delayed and 420 were canceled. Airports in Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo are expected to be hit hard by snow, while those in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston may face issues due to rain. For those driving, AAA suggests leaving before 10 a. m. to avoid the worst traffic.
