Power Crisis in Cuba: 10 Million Left in the Dark

Cuba, HavanaSat Oct 19 2024
Waking up one morning with no electricity. That's what happened to the entire population of Cuba recently. The island's power grid failed, leaving 10 million people without any electricity. The cause? One of the main power plants stopped working at around 11 a. m. , leading to a total grid failure. The Cuban government tried to prevent this by closing schools and keeping state workers at home to save energy. But it wasn't enough. The government is now focusing on fixing the problem, with the president saying there will be no rest until power is restored. This isn't a one-time issue. Cubans have been dealing with rolling blackouts for months. In some areas outside the capital Havana, people face power cuts lasting up to 12 hours a day. The country's prime minister blames old infrastructure, fuel shortages, and increased demand for the ongoing blackouts. Cuba's oil supply is a big problem. Venezuela, Cuba's main oil supplier, has cut shipments. Other countries like Russia and Mexico have also reduced their shipments. With the demand for electricity rising and the supply of oil dropping, the situation is becoming critical. People in Cuba are worried. In Havana, residents expressed alarm. One person said it felt like the country had hit rock bottom. A woman in Old Havana feared things could get even worse. The government blames the U. S. embargo and the pandemic for the economic crisis, which has led to shortages in food, medicine, and fuel.
