Predicting HCC Recurrence: A Look at MRI and Neoadjuvant Therapy
Asia, ChinaWed Jan 29 2025
Scientists have been working on a new way to predict if patients with a type of liver cancer, called hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), will have an early comeback of their disease after surgery. This cancer often grows beyond a certain size and number of tumors, which doctors call "beyond Milan. " The team used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create a model that can forecast how long patients might stay cancer-free for up to two years after surgery. They also tested if this model works for patients who get special treatment before surgery, known as neoadjuvant therapy. This therapy aims to shrink the tumors before removing them. The study wants to see if the MRI model can help doctors make better treatment decisions for these patients.
It's important to note that this research focuses on a specific group of patients with advanced HCC who are eligible for surgery. The MRI model could give doctors a heads-up about which patients might benefit most from quick follow-up care after surgery. It could also help decide if neoadjuvant therapy is the right choice for some patients. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings and see how well the model works in real-world settings.
