Prediction Markets Surge Past $1.4 Billion for 2026 Midterms

Prediction markets tracking the 2026 midterm elections have exploded in popularity, with over $1.4 billion in trading volume already recorded, according to recent data. This surge reflects growing public interest in betting on real-world events, from politics to pop culture.

Kalshi, the leading U.S. prediction market platform, has handled nearly $1.1 billion in trades tied to the upcoming midterms. These markets cover everything from individual race outcomes to campaign rally soundbites. Its main competitor, Polymarket, has seen more than $340 million in midterm-related trading across both its U.S. and international platforms.

Industry analyst Dustin Gouker noted that while these numbers are small compared to sports and crypto markets, they still represent a significant shift. He believes these markets offer valuable insights by aggregating polls and public sentiment into real-time probabilities.

Trading is expected to spike on Election Day as professional bettors react to closing polls. However, like traditional gambling, most participants end up losing money. The rise of prediction markets has also stirred controversy, with federal regulators cracking down on insider trading. Kalshi has already suspended six candidates for improperly wagering on their own races.

Legal battles have shaped the industry's growth. PredictIt, launched in 2014, faced challenges under the Biden administration but won court rulings allowing election markets to continue. The Trump administration has since supported the sector, drafting rules to protect these platforms. Smaller players like ForecastEx and UK-based Smarkets are also expanding, eyeing the 2028 presidential election as their next big opportunity.
