Prediction Sites Face Big Risk of New Ban
United States, USAFri Mar 27 2026
Prediction platforms that let users bet on events like elections, sports games and pop culture shows are facing a possible legal crackdown. A bill called the STOP Corrupt Bets Act is set to be filed in the Senate, while a House version will follow soon.
The new law would prohibit trading on many popular topics, especially politics and sports, turning the industry into a legal gray zone.
Those who run these sites argue they are more like commodity trading than gambling, but critics say they break existing state and federal gambling rules and can be easily manipulated.
Users buy contracts that pay out if a chosen outcome happens, such as which party wins the midterms or who will win a reality TV season. If their prediction is right, they can cash out for profit or sell the contract to another trader.
Unlike a traditional sportsbook where you bet against a house, here the value is set by market participants.
Earlier this week Senators John Curtis and Adam Schiff introduced a different bill that would label prediction markets as gambling sites, stripping the Commodity Futures Trading Commission of oversight.
The new proposal goes further by banning certain categories altogether, sparking concerns that politicians could be targeted for real‑world influence.
Senator Jeff Merkley warned that allowing anyone to bet on congressional actions or military moves could lead to corruption and undermine public trust.
In response, leading platforms like Kashi and Polymarket announced they would block certain public figures from trading in sensitive markets to address the issue.
