PrEP Awareness Varies Across Chinese Cities for MSM
ChinaTue May 26 2026
In China, men who have sex with men (MSM) can protect themselves from HIV using pre‑exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. It works well when taken regularly, but many MSM still do not know about it or use it.
Researchers wanted to find out if the city you live in matters. They looked at data from many MSM across several Chinese cities. The goal was to see whether awareness, willingness, and actual use of PrEP differ from one city to another.
The study used a multilevel analysis. This means they considered factors at both the individual level (age, education, income) and the city level (health services, stigma levels). By doing this, they could separate personal choices from local influences.
Results showed that city differences do exist. In some cities, more MSM were aware of PrEP and felt ready to try it. In others, awareness was low and willingness stayed below average. These gaps suggest that local policies or outreach programs are uneven.
The researchers also noted that even when MSM were willing, many still had never used PrEP. This points to barriers such as cost, access, or fear of being judged by healthcare workers.
Overall, the study emphasizes that where you live can shape your chances to learn about and use a powerful HIV prevention tool. Efforts to spread PrEP must address both individual education and city‑wide support systems.
