On a bright Thursday morning in Virginia, a group of 3- and 4-year-olds were busy making their voices heard. They weren't debating laws or policies, but something just as important to them: which animated dog from the cartoon "PAW Patrol" was the best. The children at ACCA Child Development Center had two finalists to choose from – Chase, a German shepherd in a police uniform, and Skye, a girl-favorite with a pink “pup pack. ” The vote was close: five votes for each! Expert Dan Gartrell explains that teaching preschoolers about democracy starts with making sure everyone feels valued. That’s what ACCA is all about. Kids here get to pick what they learn and even what food to try. On this day, they were thinking about "PAW Patrol. " Little Jade in Room 11 loved Skye because she saves everybody with her helicopter. Across the hall in Room 13, some kids thought they won the election. That's okay – everyone is learning that their opinion matters. Many kids at ACCA are the first in their families born in the U. S. The school’s director, María-Isabel Ballivian, wants them to feel American right now. She throws a big Fourth of July party and reminds them they belong. Back in Room 14, another vote was cast – this time for Skye. With a count, Skye won by one!
