President Biden Gives New Chance to Two Chicago Fraudsters
Fri Dec 13 2024
In a surprising move, President Biden has decided to commute the sentences of two well-known Chicago-area fraudsters. Rita Crundwell, who once worked as the comptroller for the small town of Dixon, stole a staggering $54 million to fund her extravagant lifestyle and horse breeding business. Sentenced to nearly 20 years, her release was set for 2028. Eric Bloom, the former leader of Sentinel Management Group, defrauded investors of over $665 million by taking risky financial bets. He was facing a 14-year sentence, due to end in 2026. While neither of their convictions are erased, Biden's orders immediately end their prison time.
This decision comes as part of a larger list of 39 pardons and 1, 499 commutations announced by the White House. Crundwell, now 71, had petitioned for early release in 2020, citing poor health and the COVID-19 pandemic. She expressed remorse, stating "There is never a day that goes by, I do not regret my crime. " Bloom, on the other hand, was convicted in 2012 for his role in the largest financial fraud case in Chicago's federal court history.
Crundwell served about eight years before being moved to a halfway house in Downers Grove last year. Bloom was serving his sentence in a residential reentry facility in Florida. These commutations raise questions about rehabilitation and the justice system's capacity for forgiveness.
