President Biden Pardons Historic Black Leader and Others

WASHINGTON, USAMon Jan 20 2025
On Sunday, President Joe Biden made a significant move by posthumously pardoning Marcus Garvey, a prominent Black nationalist from the 1920s. Garvey's conviction for mail fraud was seen by many as politically motivated. Biden also pardoned four other individuals and commuted the sentences of two more. Among those pardoned were a top Virginia lawmaker, immigrant rights activists, and advocates for criminal justice reform and gun violence prevention. Marcus Garvey was a key figure who inspired future civil rights leaders like Malcolm X. His conviction led to his deportation to Jamaica, where he was born. Garvey's legacy includes instilling a sense of pride and destiny among millions of Black people. The pardons and commutations were framed by Biden as part of the nation's "sacred covenant. " He emphasized that Americans support each other, even when mistakes are made. Biden has already set a record for the most individual pardons and commutations during his presidency. One of the pardoned individuals, Don Scott, currently serves as the speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. Scott was convicted of a drug offense in 1994 and spent eight years in prison before turning his life around and entering politics. His success story is seen as inspirational by many, including Virginia Governor Glenn Younkin. Another notable pardon went to Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who faced deportation to Trinidad and Tobago after a nonviolent conviction. Kemba Smith Pradia, who was once sentenced to 24 years for a drug offense but later became a prison reform activist, also received a pardon. Darryl Chambers, a gun violence prevention advocate, was another recipient. Biden commuted the sentences of Michelle West, who was serving life for a drug conspiracy, and Robin Peoples, who was convicted of bank robbery and sentenced to 111 years. Both would face significantly lower sentences under current laws.
