Prime Minister's Aide Allegedly Leaks Secret Info to Shape Public Opinion
IsraelMon Nov 18 2024
You're trying to influence people's thoughts on a big event, like hostage negotiations. You might think about leaking some secret info, right? Well, that's what an aide to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accused of doing. Eliezer Feldstein allegedly got his hands on a highly sensitive document from the Israeli military and shared it with foreign press. Why? To sway public opinion during hostage talks with Gaza.
Here's how it all went down. A military reservist snagged the classified doc and passed it to Feldstein in April. Fast forward to September, and Feldstein decides to share it with Israeli media. But censorship rules blocked that, so he sent it to foreign outlets instead. Two articles, in the UK's Jewish Chronicle and Germany's Bild, popped up, backing Netanyahu's take on the situation.
Israeli opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz weren't too happy about this. They called it a "national crime, " blaming Netanyahu's office for the leak. Netanyahu's team denied any involvement, saying Feldstein wasn't part of security talks. They also dismissed claims that the leak hurt hostage negotiations.
This whole thing raises some big questions. Should classified info ever be used to sway public opinion? And how does this affect trust in government?
