Protest Leader Faces Deportation: What's Really Going On?
New York, USAMon Mar 10 2025
Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist, is in hot water. He was recently arrested by federal immigration agents. This happened after he played a big role in protests at Columbia University. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest. They said it was because of President Donald Trump’s orders against antisemitism. Khalil hasn't been charged with a crime.
Khalil's lawyer, Amy Greer, shared some interesting details. The agents initially said they were there to revoke Khalil's student visa. But when Greer pointed out that Khalil is a permanent resident with a green card, the agents changed their tune. They said they would revoke that documentation instead.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is not happy about this. They called for Khalil's immediate release. CAIR said Khalil is a lawful permanent resident who hasn't been charged with any crime. They see this as an attack on free speech and immigration laws.
This isn't the only incident. Federal immigration authorities also visited another international student at Columbia. They tried to take her into custody but were stopped. The student union representing the woman said the agents didn't have a warrant.
Columbia University has guidelines for federal authorities on campus. They state that ICE agents need a judicial warrant or subpoena to access non-public areas. This includes housing.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a message. He said the administration will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America. So they can be deported.
Khalil is the first known person to be detained for deportation. This is under Trump’s crackdown on students protesting the war in Gaza. Khalil and other student leaders reject claims of antisemitism. They said they are part of a broader anti-war movement. This movement includes Jewish students and groups.
Khalil is currently being held in an immigration detention center in Louisiana. He was initially sent to a facility in New Jersey. It’s unclear when he will have a hearing in immigration court.
