People across the U. S. took to the streets in many cities to protest against ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) last weekend. This wave of demonstrations was set up by a group of left-leaning organizations. The main event was organized by a coalition called "ICE Out for Good. " They planned over 1, 000 events across the country, calling it a "weekend of action. "
The protests were sparked by the recent death of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. She died after a confrontation with ICE agents. According to federal authorities, she tried to run over an officer with her car. The group Indivisible, which is part of the coalition, spoke out about her death. They said she was a mother of three and a valued member of her community.
Leah Greenberg, a leader of Indivisible, talked about the protests. She said people were coming together to mourn and demand accountability from ICE. She emphasized that the violence caused by ICE is not just a number. It affects real people with families and futures.
The protests led to some tense moments with the police. In Austin, officers arrested at least three people as things got heated. In Los Angeles, police faced off against protesters outside an ICE detention center. Multiple arrests were made after protesters refused to leave the area when ordered to do so.
On the other side, members of the Trump administration defended ICE's actions. They said ICE is focusing on deporting illegal immigrants who have committed crimes. Vice President JD Vance highlighted a list of individuals arrested in Minnesota, including convicted child rapists and murderers. He emphasized the importance of arresting and deporting these individuals for national security.
