A heated debate is unfolding in Rhode Island as a proposal for a new career-focused high school in Providence faces strong opposition. The state's Council on Elementary and Secondary Education is set to discuss the New England Technical Academy, a plan backed by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
The proposal has stirred up a political storm, with powerful unions that played a crucial role in Governor Dan McKee's election expressing their disapproval. These unions, including the teachers' unions and the building and construction trades, argue that the new school could negatively impact existing career and technical education programs in the state.
The construction trades, who typically stay neutral on charter schools, are particularly concerned about the potential impact on Davies Career & Technical High School in Lincoln and the Construction & Career Academy in Cranston. This opposition is significant as these groups are key supporters of McKee, who is already facing tough reelection challenges and low approval ratings.
Despite the opposition, the New England Technical Academy has garnered substantial public support. Out of 1, 939 public comments received in 2025, a staggering 98 percent were in favor of the proposal. Victor Capellan, the former Central Falls superintendent leading the proposal, is optimistic about its approval, but the outcome may hinge on the council members present at the meeting.
The debate highlights the complex interplay between education policy, political alliances, and community interests. As the council deliberates, the fate of the New England Technical Academy hangs in the balance, with significant implications for Providence's educational landscape.
