PS5 Gets New Price Tags in Korea

South KoreaMon Apr 27 2026
South Korean gamers will see higher prices for the PlayStation 5 this month. Starting on May 1, Sony will raise the Disc Edition to ₩948, 000 and the Digital Edition to ₩858, 000. The upgraded PS5 Pro will cost ₩1, 298, 000. Even the PlayStation Portal remote player will climb to ₩378, 000. This is the first time a PlayStation console has been priced up more than once in its generation. Usually, prices fall after launch as parts become cheaper and production ramps up. But global supply shortages, rising component costs, and political tensions have pushed prices higher instead. When the PS5 first arrived in Korea, the Digital Edition sold for ₩598, 000 and the Disc version for ₩748, 000.
In North America, the console started at $399 and $499, but has now climbed to $649. 99 for the Disc model. Japan followed suit on April 2, setting a new price of ¥97, 980 (about ₩900, 000). Those moves hinted that Korea would raise its prices soon—now confirmed. Gamers may wonder why the cost keeps rising. Smaller factories, shipping delays, and new chip shortages mean each console is more expensive to build. Sony’s decision reflects a global trend: consoles are becoming pricier as the tech industry faces new challenges. Still, the PS5 offers a powerful gaming experience. It features lightning‑fast loading, stunning graphics, and an expanding library of titles. For many players, the higher price may be worth the added performance and future-proofing.
