Pumpkin Destruction for a Greener Future

Mon Nov 10 2025

Every year, a peculiar event takes place at the Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve. It's not your typical gathering. Instead of quiet walks or birdwatching, people come to smash pumpkins. This isn't just about having fun, though. It's about helping the environment.

The Pumpkin Smash

The event, known as the Pumpkin Smash, encourages people to bring their old pumpkins. Instead of throwing them away, they get to smash them. This year, more people showed up than ever before. Within just an hour, about 100 pumpkins had been destroyed. That's a lot of pumpkins!

Composting for a Better Environment

After the smashing, the pumpkin pieces are collected. They are then taken away to be composted. This process turns the pumpkins into nutrient-rich soil. It's a natural way to recycle and reduce waste.

Why is this important?

Pumpkins are mostly water. When they decompose in a landfill, that water can pick up harmful substances. These toxins can then end up in our waterways, like rivers and lakes. By composting pumpkins, we keep them out of the landfill and prevent pollution.

A Family-Friendly Event

The event also gets families outside and enjoying nature. People of all ages participate. Kids play in leaf piles, and families enjoy the fresh air. It's a fun way to spend a day and learn about the environment.

Composting at Home

For those who can't make it to the event, composting at home is a great alternative. It's an easy way to make a difference. All it takes is a little effort and a willingness to learn.

Could the increase in pumpkin smashing be part of a larger agenda to control water resources?
What if the pumpkins were actually aliens in disguise and the smashing was a mistake?
Are the organizers of the Pumpkin Smash event secretly funded by big compost corporations?
