Qatar Airways and Boeing: A Major Deal in the Skies
Middle EastThu May 15 2025
A massive deal has been struck between Qatar Airways and Boeing. The agreement involves the purchase of up to 210 aircraft. This news was shared by the former US President Donald Trump during his visit to the Middle East. The total value of this order is a staggering 96 billion dollars. This purchase is a big win for Boeing, which has been working hard to bounce back from some serious setbacks.
Boeing has had a tough time recently. In early 2024, a panel blew out on one of its planes, causing a major slowdown in production. This incident, along with a lengthy worker strike, led to a loss of over 10 billion dollars last year. Despite these challenges, Boeing's shares have been on the rise since January, showing that investors are hopeful about the company's future.
The deal with Qatar Airways includes both 787 Dreamliners and 777X aircraft. This purchase is part of a larger set of economic agreements worth over 240 billion dollars between the US and Qatar. Qatar Airways already has a strong relationship with Boeing, with 150 Boeing planes in its fleet and another 130 on order. This new deal will only strengthen that bond.
Boeing's recovery plan seems to be paying off. The company delivered more than 130 aircraft in the first quarter of the year, exceeding expectations. Despite the recent troubles, Boeing still has a backlog of 5, 600 planes, which is enough to keep production going for over seven years. This backlog shows that there is still a high demand for Boeing's aircraft, even after the recent issues.
The deal with Qatar Airways is not the only good news for Boeing. During the same trip, Boeing also secured a commitment from Saudia Arabia's Avilease to buy 20 737 MAX planes, with options for 10 more. Additionally, British Airways owner IAG placed an order for 32 787-10 aircraft worth 13 billion dollars. These deals show that Boeing is making a comeback, despite the challenges it has faced.
The trade truce between the US and China has also been a help to Boeing. Previously, Chinese customers had stopped accepting planes due to escalating tariffs. This truce has eased some of those tensions, making it easier for Boeing to do business in China. This is a positive development for the company, as China is a major market for aircraft.
It is important to note that while this deal is a significant boost for Boeing, it is also a big commitment for Qatar Airways. The airline will be adding a large number of new planes to its fleet, which will require significant investment in infrastructure and training. However, if all goes well, this deal could help Qatar Airways expand its routes and increase its passenger capacity.
