Quakes in Nevada: What Californians Felt
Tue Dec 10 2024
Did you know that earthquakes can be felt hundreds of miles away? Well, that's what happened on Monday afternoon when a magnitude 5. 5 earthquake hit Nevada. The epicenter was about 48 miles southeast of Reno, but people in Central California felt the shaking too. In Sacramento, a person saw their Christmas tree ornaments sway, and water in a swimming pool sloshed around. In Davis, computers and chairs moved slightly, and a young man felt his bed rocking. Even in Reno, about 50 miles from the epicenter, people felt the tremor. The shaking was intense at the epicenter, but it weakened as it traveled. People in the San Francisco Bay Area and Fresno also reported feeling the quake, even though they were more than 200 miles away.
Nevada is no stranger to earthquakes. There are at least 30 faults in the Reno-Carson City area that could cause damage. If a big earthquake were to hit, like a magnitude 7. 1 on the Genoa fault, it could cause many deaths. So, it's important to be prepared, just in case.
