Quick Relief for Sports Injuries: A New Injection Technique
North Carolina, USAThu May 21 2026
Doctors are looking at a new way to help athletes heal faster. Instead of big surgeries, they use a tiny injection that blocks the extra blood vessels that form after an injury. These vessels keep inflammation alive and make pain last longer. By shutting them off, the pain can disappear almost instantly.
The treatment is called joint embolization. It targets small “baby arteries” that appear when a joint is hurt, especially in sports where the same spot gets hit over and over. When these arteries stay around, they release chemicals that damage cartilage and keep the joint sore. Blocking them stops both the damage and the pain.
One example is a young football player who could not train because of knee pain. After the procedure, he was able to move again and return to practice in a matter of days. The same could happen for many other sports injuries, from torn shoulder tendons to ankle sprains.
Because the injection is minimally invasive, it avoids the risks of surgery and repeated steroid shots. It does not weaken muscles or tendons, so athletes can keep training safely. The relief is expected to last from one to two years with a single session.
The idea comes from the world of cancer treatment. In tumors, new blood vessels grow to feed the tumor; cutting them off stops the growth. The same principle works for pain: stop the bad vessels and starve the inflammation.
The technique is still new in the United States. A health system has begun offering it in North Carolina and plans to expand eastward. The goal is to educate doctors, athletes, and patients about this option because many people are unaware it exists.
While the focus is on professional sports, anyone with chronic joint pain could benefit. Whether an Olympian or a regular person who can’t sleep because of knee discomfort, the injection offers a chance for fast and lasting relief.
